[Irene, Rita, Andy and Max are already there]
[Andy looks very excited]
[All people arrive]
[Jacob and Ross help Paula out of the boat while Allysa holds their bags]
[Sarah gets off the plane standing tall with a math book in her hand. Alex and Aba walk out of the plane both
with bags and both looking nervous) (Serena and Camilla walk off the boat, Serena grips Camilla’s hand tightly
and smiles. Camilla yanks her hand back. Serena and Camilla walk the rest of the way of the boat glaring at
each other, Nate and Tony follow carrying all of the luggage]
[Andy, Max, Irene and Rita are standing at the gate, Andy looking very excited]
[All 7 Teachers and principal greet students at entrance]
Principal Irene: Hello, it’s nice to see that everyone made it!
[Serena goes to meet Irene, and shakes her hand]
[Camilla stops and makes eye contact with Rita and they both nod. Nate keeps walking towards the school, and
soon Camilla and Rita follow chatting softly]
Serena: Good Morning, I’m Camilla and Nate’s parent. You can refer to me for anything about my children.
Hopefully nothing (Serena glares, at no one in particular) will trouble them.
Tony: Hey! I-I’m their parent too!
[Serena and Irene ignore Tony’s outburst
Principal Irene: Of course, I love your hair by the way, it reminds me of the night sky.
Serena: Thank you it took a long time to get ready. Would you look at the time! I should be on my way now.
[Tony follows Serena with ALL the luggage]
[Sarah walks up to Irene]
Principal Irene: Hi dear, are you all alone?
Sarah: Y-yes, but I’m alright! Thank you for asking.
[Sarah swiftly walks past Irene, towards the east wing of the school]
Principal Irene: De nada?*You’re welcome?*
[Irene turns her head to the side and watches Sarah walk off]
[Alex and Aba slowly approach Irene, Alex is hiding behind Aba]
Aba: Good morning, I’m Aba and this is Alex. (looks behind him and gestures to where Alex is standing)
Principal Irene: Hello, it’s very nice to meet the both of you. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.
Aba: (facing Alex) You should go on inside, I will see you in a few seconds.
Principal Irene: Max will go with you. (turns to find Max and shouts) Max! Please show Alex around.
Max: Of course. (to Alex) Come on dude, I want to show you the water.
[Alex pushes their hair back and shrugs, following Max]
Principal Irene: Of course, Alex is a smart person and this happens to be a school for gifted students.
Aba: Thank you, this means a lot to Alex, and me, of  course..
Aba: Alex would prefer to have their own dorm and bathroom. Can that be arranged?
[A wave of sympathy passes over Irene’s face]
Principal Irene: La Academia De La Diosa Del Sol welcomes all. No matter what you identify as. Alex will
be welcomed here with open arms.
[Aba nods and walks towards the way Max and Alex went]
[Jacob and Ross finally get Paula off the boat and walk toward Irene. Jacob and Allysa start arguing about
who will carry the luggage]
Paula: Hello, I’m Paula and this is Ross. We are Jacob and Allysa’s grandparents. We’ll be their guardians for
the school year.
[Ross turns toward the boat were Jacob and Allysa are still arguing
Ross: Children, Children, stop arguing! I sure hope you don’t do this during school.
Jacob and Allysa in usion: Yes Grandpa . . .
Ross: Good, come along now, it was nice to see you Ir- what do you want us to call you?
Principal Irene: You can call me Principal, or Principal Irene.
Paula (warmly): Thank you Principal Irene for all you’re doing for these children.
[Jacob, Allysa, and their grandparents walk towards the school, Irene turns toward Andy]
Principal Irene: Come on Andy, a new school year is waiting.
[Irene and Andy turn and walk towards the school]

Scene 2
The Plane Crash
[All the students are sitting around the campfire]
Jacob: Does anyone know why we’re here?
Nate: Nope.
Sarah: Not a clue.
Principle Irene: Hello everyone. Welcome to La Academia De La Diosa Del Sol. I know you probably all are
wondering why you’re here. This is my daughter, Rita. She will explain everything to you.
[everyone claps] [Principal leaves]
Rita: Hi. (shy wave) We have one goal at this school and it is to change the world. You are all here because you
are extremely talented in one or two of the following areas: arts, technology, science, math, or engineering.
The world is on the brink of war and we need to help stop it in any way possible. That’s why al-
(cut off by loud crash!)
Sarah: (jumping up) What was that?!
[Everyone rushes toward the noise]
Max: Omg! It’s a plane, and the pilot looks hurt! I hope they’re not. Oh no, the crash might have killed some
seabirds!!
Allysa (Sarcastically): Oh no, the seabirds.
Max: (Snapping): Those birds, they’re not simulated okay, they can suffer!
[Camilla goes into the plane to check]
Camilla:(yelling) The pilot is dead!
Alli: (Shouting) HELP, PLEASE!
Camilla: Whoever you are come over here!
Alli: I can’t, I-I’m stuck!
[Waves her free hand frantically in all directions]
Camilla (With unnecessary roughness): Why are you doing that? Are you blind?!
Alli (Hesitantly and with sadness): …..Yes…...since I was 6.
Camilla: Oh my, I- I’m so sorry, I didn’t know that.
(Camilla helps Alli get over to everyone. They sit down right next to each other)
Alli:(scrunches face in pain) Ow.
Nate: Are you ok?
[Alli shows Nate a huge gash on her leg.]
Alli: My leg hurts really bad.
Nate: Let me help you.
[Nate helps Alli bandage up her leg]
Nate: Do you have any other injuries?
Alli: My head kinda hurts.
Nate: You should go lay down.
Alli: Thanks captain obvious.
Nate: No problem.
[Everyone starts to walk to the dorms].
Alex: [to Alli] Wait a minute, I recognize you.
[everyone stops and turns towards Alex and Alli]
Alli: Weird. How? I don’t recognize you.
Alex: You look like someone in a picture of me and my mom.
Alli: Hold up. What?
Alex: You must be my half-sister.
[Everyone gasps very over-dramatically and audibly]
Alli: What in heck do you mean I’m your half-sister?!
Alex: Since I was little I always keep a picture of my real mom, me, and another girl that I’ve never met in my
wallet. (shows picture in wallet) All I know is that she was my half-sister. That girl looks exactly like you.
Alli: But- but I always lived with my mom and dad. Man, they never told me I had a sibling.
Alex: That’s probably because they got rid of me when I was born.
Alli: So basically you have a picture of me when I was 7, which was 6 years ago. I guess I still look the same.
Alex: Yeah, basically.
Alli: How did you even get the picture?
Alex: When Mom and Dad abandoned me, they left the picture with me.
Rita: Wait, wait, wait. Why would they abandon you?
Alex: I honestly don’t know. I don’t remember.
Sarah: I know how you feel. My parents died when I was 5.
(Camila raises hand)
Camilla: I hate my mom.
Jacob: I guess we all have family problems.
(Everyone sighs)
Rita: Alli, for now you can join our school. We’ll figure everything else out later.
Alli: Thanks you guys. This day went way different than I expected.
[They all continue walking to the dorms]

Scene 3
The First Day of School
[Beginning of the school day]
[Everyone walks into the classroom]
Sarah: Yes! Finally school!
Jacob:  You’re the first person I know to be excited about school.
Allysa:  Be nice.
Jacob (aggressively): Says Ms. Idontcareaboutthelivesofseabirds!
Alex: Stop bickering, you’re stressing me out.
[They all sit down]
[The Principal walks into the room]
Principal: Hello class!
[Everyone gets quiet]
Principal: We are going to talk about what happened this week. It was a tragedy. Conflict broke out in the
Bahamas.
Nate and Camilla: What??!!
[Principal Irene looks at them sadly, then presses a button on her remote control and a video starts playing]
Newscaster: Brazil’s leader Caique Maricota has declared war on the U.S. and their Cuban allies after they
threatened to raise tariffs on Brazil for criminal actions. Here’s what happened.
[A video starts playing of warships fighting, planes dropping bombs, and people shooting at each other from
behind concrete walls]
Camilla: (Sobbing into her hands) Ohhhh, (Inhales) noooo, Nate what if that’s (Hiccups) that’s mom, or dad
there.
Nate (Shakily): I know, I know.
(Nate pats Camilla’s shoulder)
Principal Irene: Ohhhh, mis hijos! *My children!*
[She swoops in and hugs the sobbing pair]
Max: What did the newscaster mean when he said, Brazil’s criminal actions?
[Alex kicks Max]
Alex: Not the time Max.
Rita: Mama, should I call their parents?
Principal Irene: Yes, that would be best.
[Rita leaves the room to call their parents]
[A few minutes later, when the siblings have calmed, Rita returns]
[Nate and Camilla rush to the door]
Rita: They’re alive.
[Nate and Camilla sigh, now crying with joy]
Sarah: So, is anyone going to mention the elephant in the room or should I?
[Gestures toward the grandparents who step in]
Allysa: Grandma?
Jacob: Grandpa?
Allysa and Jacob: Principal Irene, what is the meaning of this?
Principal Irene (Smiling slightly): I think you mean Aunt Irene.
[Everyone gasps dramatically]
Allysa: But-but (pointing at grandparents and Irene) that means...
Grandpa: Yes, Irene’s our daughter.
Rita (looking shocked): So I’m a cousin to those two?!
Jacob: So wait, you weren’t told about this whole nuttiness either?
Allysa: Why weren’t we told about this, we would have loved Rita as a cousin.
Jacob (Quietly mumbling): Speak for yourself.
Rita (slightly offended): Hey!
Sarah: Everyone loves throwing shade, but I personally want to hear an explanation.
Grandma (Sighs): Look, the Academy-
Principal Irene: La Academia.
Grandma: La Academia is supposed to be a secret, no one but the U.S. and Cuba were supposed to know about it.
And because your had parents lived in Italy (Points to Jacob and Allysa) it would have been suspicious if you
disappeared before we could get you both VISAs.
Jacob: But we got VISA’s three months before we left for Cuba!!
Grandpa: And we didn’t want to tell you then because we didn’t trust not to reveal the existence of the school.
Allysa: We would've kept quiet!
Jacob: No, you wouldn’t have.
(Allysa slaps Jacob)
Principal Irene: Ay, Ay, no fighting!
Grandma: So what do you say, do you forgive us?
(She puts her arms our in a hugging sort of gesture)
Allysa and Jacob: Yeah.
[Everyone moves in for one big group hug]
End of Scene 3
Scene 4
The Hurricane
[Students are sitting in technology class]
Teacher 1: So a quantum computer would be able to calculate all the equations at once.
Allysa: So wait, photons can be in two states at once?
Teacher 1: Yes, because th-
[Alarm Sounds]
(Teacher looks up in shock)
Teacher 1: I have to go warn the rest of the staff!
[Teacher 1 runs out of the room]
Camilla: (covering ears)What is that?! It’s so loud!
(Camilla continues grumbling. Meanwhile, Max reaches his phone, and sends a text to his uncle, the janitor.
Instantly, a text message alert sounds.)
Max: My uncle says it’s a hurricane!
Everyone except Max: What?!
Alli (Softly): In the spring?
(Max looks distastefully straight into camera)
Max: Climate Change.
(Max spits on floor, everyone shudders dramatically)
[Few seconds later]
(Andy bursts into the room)
Andy (Quickly): Come on guys! We gotta go, we gotta go, we gotta go! An F4 hurricane is speeding towards us!
Camilla: I am not a guy! Stop calling me one you sexist!
Alex: Not the time Camilla! Come on!
(Everyone jumps up, and follows Andy as he runs)
(Andy runs outside, ushering the kids into a secret underground bunker by the main entrance. The group walks
in, silently and fearfully looking around)
(Rita softly touches the walls)
Rita: Strong architecture. Would hold up in a hurricane, not much more. Most collapsable by upper-right corner,
strongest in middle due to support beams.
Sarah: Nobody cares, Rita!
Rita: You would care if you were standing in the upper-right corner and it collapsed!
(Over-exaggerated gasp)
Sarah: How dare you!
(Sarah moves to slap Rita, but Max moves in between the two girls)
Max: Stop it! Stop it! You guys are screaming louder than a group of Howler Monkeys!
Alex: Yeah, start grunting and I’d have thought you’d have turned into some!
Max: Howler Monkeys don’t grunt, they make a whooping sound, for your information.
(Everyone gathers in the middle. Rita and Sarah move pointedly away from each other)
Andy: Okay, let’s start a heating source. When the hurricane hits, it’s going to turn cold quickly. Alex, You see
those sticks in the corner? Can you grab them and toss them into the middle, inside the circle of rocks? I’m going
to try to get a fire started.
Allysa: I’ve always wanted to make a fire.
Max: You’ve never made a fire before?
Allysa (with an evil grin): Only digital ones.
(Alex gets the sticks, and Andy begins trying to make a fire.  Allysa watches and stares intently, almost
humorously invested in the process)
[The fire starts]
(The group gathers around the fire, chattering loudly. Suddenly, the door opens, and the rest of the staff walk in,
drenched)
Principal Irene (dramatically gesturing): We almost died! Oh, good, you made a fire. Scootch over Nate, por
favor?
(All the teachers sit down, joining the group. They chat until the fire goes out)
Principal Irene: So that was the time I dyed my hair purple . . .
Teacher 2: Those purple flowers are called Cuban Oregano.
Principal Irene: But those can only be found outside the school? How do you know sobre los flores?
(Everyone looks suspiciously at Teacher 2)
Teacher 2: Uhhhh….
[The lightbulbs flicker for a moment, then go out]
Everyone: Aaaaahhh!!!
Alex: I can’t see, I can’t see!!
(Camilla lights a match)
Principal Irene: Andy, go up and see if the storm has passed.
Andy: Yes ma’am.
(Andy salutes her, then laughing, leaves the bunker)
Jacob (Muttering): He’s always joking around.
Max: Shut up about my uncle.
End of Scene 4
Scene 5
Escape
Andy: The storm has passed us, and we can all go back to class.
Jacob: Finally!
Sarah: Let’s get out of this dark, basement...thing.
Camilla: (Sighs) Do we have to? This was much more fun.
Max (Sarcastically): Yeah, it’s really great being stuck in a bunker infested with Leaf Cutter Ants and Tomato
Pinworms.
Alli: Okaaay…
(Everyone hurriedly exits the bunker after that)
(A few days later during their math class, Camilla decides she is done with this school and wants to leave.)
Camilla: (Nudging Nate, whispering) Jeez, this school is terrible. I wish I was on the ship with Dad.
Nate: I guess…
Camilla: Come on, let’s get out of here. Dad’s homeschooling was MUCH better.
(Nate looks down with uncertainty)
Nate: Yeah, you have a point there. I guess I’ll go with you.
Camilla:(thinking out loud) We should go during our break period, that way it’s less likely that no one will notice
us until we’ve gained some distance on this school.
(Nate raises his hands to his neck, palms up)
Nate: But we’re on an island. How do you expect us to escape
Camilla: (With a twisted smile) I know JUST the way to escape.
(Indistinct chatter on how to escape)
Nate: Let’s do this.
Camilla: That’s the spirit!
(It’s now break, and Camilla and Nate are ready to escape at any minute.)
Camilla: All the teachers are in the break room for now. I can cut the barbed wire with the Swiss Army Knife
that Mom gave me. That way we can get right outside the school and then run to the shore from there. We really
must be quick. Break is done in (pauses to check watch) about five minutes. Then the teachers will get back.
Nate: Ok, then let’s go.
Camilla: That’s the spirit, let’s go!
(They get to the heavily guarded property line of the school)
(As Camilla is cutting the barbed wire, she gets cut by the knife)
Camilla: (clenching her fist) Aughh!
Nate: What happened? Are you ok?
Camilla: (closes her eyes) I cut myself pretty deep in my hand. It’s really bleeding!
Nate: I’ll get a leaf or something for a bandage. Stay put.
(Nate looks around for a leaf)
Camilla: Its fine. I'll keep cutting through. We don't have enough time.
[30 seconds pass]
Camilla: Ok, just hurry up, it’s getting more painful!
(Nate rushes to the forest to get a leaf to bandage Camilla’s steadily bleeding hand. Nate puts sap on the edges
on the leaf to make a homemade bandage)
Nate: Here, hold still so I can put the leaf bandage on.
(Camilla lets out a small groan)
Nate: (putting the bandage on Camilla’s hand) Steady… Steady… There.
(Nate and Camilla walk down to the beach when they see a strange metal box)
Nate: Wait… what's that?
Camilla: Looks like the hut things the Romans would use.  (dry chuckle)
Nate: Wait! Those are two of our teachers going in there! Look!
Camilla: What do you mean? (pauses to look closer) No way.
(The two teachers are about to turn their heads. As their heads turn…)
Camilla: (whispers) Hide, quick!!
(Camilla and Nate dive into the underbrush)
Teacher 2: What was that?
Teacher 3: It was nothing. Probably just a small gust of wind. Let’s hurry up.
(They quickly walk into the building and shut the door swiftly behind them. This makes Nate and Camilla unsure
about the teachers. Camilla and Nate stay in the bushes for another minute or two.)
Nate: Do you think the teachers are gone by now?
Camilla: Yeah, let's go.
(Just seconds after getting out of the underbrush, a mechanical whirring occurs near the metal box thing.)
Nate: I’m going back right now.
Camilla: No, we gotta check this out!
Nate: No way! I’ve always listened to you! I’ve listened to you on the ship, when we escaped, not now!
Camilla: Well I’m going to check it out. Leave it if you’re too scared.
Nate: I’m not scared! I’m just . . .  Just . . .
(Nate storms away)
(Camilla storms away, toward the metal box)
(The teachers spot Camilla walking toward the box and open the door.)
Camilla: Nate, RUN!
Nate: (starting to run) Come on!
Teacher 2: (starting to run  after both Nate and Camilla) Get them!
(Camilla and Nate seem to suddenly disappear into the forest)
Teacher 3: Let them go. They’re not part of our BIGGER plan.
